Joseph Lamb, A Ragtime Companion

Joseph Lamb, A Ragtime Companion Review

Ragtime, the first truly American musical genre, enjoyed it's peak popularity between 1899 and 1918, predating the jazz age. Beginning as dance music popularized by sheet music, making it the first musical form to be marketed and brought to a mass audience. The music accentuates the beat, serving as the perfect dance music for people to move to in those early days of the twentieth century. Joseph Lamb, the least known of the "Big Three" composers of classical ragtime, was born in Montclair, New Jersey in 1887. A self-taught piano virtuoso, and a fan of Scott Joplin, Lamb was fortunate enough to meet the famous Joplin when purchasing the latter's sheet music! A friendship ensued, and Joplin introduce Lamb to ragtime publisher John Stark, who released virtually all of Lamb's compositions, including "Sensation" and "American Beauty Rag". Though lesser known than either Scott Joplin or James Scott, these pieces stand up well to the test of time, and make a strong addition to any collection of ragtime music.
